Worm welfare!

July 1, 2009

A short note to say that due to the rare occurrance of a ‘heatwave‘ currently sweeping the nation we have taken the decision to delay the despatch of orders for worms or Wormery Starter / DIY Kits for the moment – probably until Monday when the freak weather is likely to have disappeared.

Much better to be here in the cool than waiting in a hot van for delivery we think.  But we do apologise if it causes you any inconvenience.

Thanks,

Liam

I am about to order a wormery and a Bokashi bucket and am wondering about the best place to put them. Are the worms damaged if they get too warm?
We are thinking of the car port for the wormery but it does get quite warm under the plastic roof IF we get some hot weather! We can put it in the shadiest corner of the car port and hopefully that will be OK.

    Hi Betty,

The car port will probably be okay for the Wormery. It’s not so much the intermittent warmth that will cause problems but actually where the unit is in direct sunlight. This essentially heats the plastic and the Wormery becomes one big incubator which can cause significant problems! The worms ideal temperature is that which we humans feel comfortable at.

Regarding the Bokashi Bucket it doesn’t really matter so much but would advise same sort of conditions as the Wormery.

    Hope this helps.

    Liam
