VAT Reduction – we’ve dropped our prices!

There probably aren’t that many people that are yet to hear the news that Alistair Darling, Chancellor of the Exchequer, yesterday announced that the rate of VAT is to be reduced in an effort to stimulate our economy.

From Monday 1st December, the official standard VAT rate will be 15%, down from 17.5%.  It will remain at this level for 13 months until the end of 2009.

I personally welcome the move – even though it is causing me a mini logistical nightmare altering all our prices!  It is, of course, the duty of any ethically-minded company to pass this saving on to the consumer.  Every penny discount helps for consumers and small businesses in my view.

However, to ensure that customers are not disadvantaged if they wish to buy now, we’ve actually dropped our prices this morning to reflect the discount ahead of the official changeover date next Monday.  Though the price has been reduced, the VAT portion of the price will remain at 17.5% officially until Monday – but we will be taking that hit between now and then so that customers can benefit from the reduction immediately.

The reduction takes, for example, £2.13 off the price of our Deluxe Original Wormery Kit.  It gives a discount of £2.34 off of the Deluxe Worm Works 4-Tray Wormery Kit.  It also brings our standard P&P charge down from £5.95 to £5.82.

So – order from Original Organics and help save the environment and your bank balance at the same time! Our wormeries do make the bestest, most fascinating, christmas pressies after all!!

Re-launching the Wormery Forum!

Late last year we launched the first incarnation of our Worm Forum – with an aim to gather a community of Wormery users (including ourselves of course!) and offer help, support and advice to those with questions or problems about / with any of our products (or just Wormeries / Composting in general).

Our intentions were simple.  To promote recycling wherever possible and the benefits environmentally of composting food waste rather than letting it go to landfill.

Unfortunately, pretty quickly the site turned into nothing more than a platform for anonymous complaints slamming our apparent ‘poor service’ and ‘inferior quality products’.  Posts which, we strongly suspect, were made by 1 or 2 of our smaller competitors.  The posts were made through anonymous proxies which hide the true online identity of the source computer / network and there wasn’t a single case where we able to actually identify that these posts came from genuine customers.  There was no trace of an order for any of them and we identified similarities in the writing style of many of the posts.

Because of this, we spent almost all our time trying to help people who didn’t really exist or who weren’t really using one of our products – so we were forced to take the forum offline earlier this year.

It was a shame that we lost what we had hoped could be a very valuable community resource, so on relaunching our website recently we thought we would give it another go.  So, as of today the wormery forum is back – in its new form.

If you have any questions at all about Wormeries / Composting or about any of our products – we would love to hear them.  Or, if you have one of our products and it’s not working as it should – come and let us know and we’ll do our best to help!  That is – if you actually are using one of our products!!

American Express now accepted!

Following our news last week that you can pay us online by PayPal, we’ve now also introduced the ability to pay by American Express.

Historically we’ve not accepted American Express due to the high costs imposed by them to process AmEx transactions.  However, we’ve now introduced the ability to use it online so we can see how many people would prefer to use it when buying from us.

To pay by American Express you simply select the American Express logo on the secure payment pages when placing your order.

NB.  American Express is only available when ordering from us online and is not available for telephone orders currently.

If you place an order with us and it’s only because we accept AmEx, we would love to hear from you!

We’ve just rolled out a brand new page to the About Us area of our website.  Webcams!  Yes, that’s right, now you can spy on us while we’re hard at work here at Original Organics.

We do like to feel that our customers and us are one big happy family (cheesy I know!) and we strive to be plain and transparent about everything we do – so please excuse the mess!

The cameras cover our main office, part of our production and despatch area and our “mission control” office which is where Paul L and I work hard all day to make sure our website and our service is the best out there.

Now you can pay us with PayPal

Over the last few months we’ve been asked a few times why we don’t accept PayPal.  Well, we’re pleased to confirm that you can now, if you wish, pay by PayPal when ordering from Original Organics, WaterButtsDirect or GreenGardenShop.

If you wish to pay by PayPal, simply follow the order process through to the Payment Pages and select PayPal as your payment option.  You will be taken to PayPal’s secure servers to complete your payment before being redirected back to our site to complete the order process.  For extra piece of mind, we are a PayPal verified seller.

Of course, we still accept credit or debit cards directly via our secure payment partners Protx and LloydsTSB Cardnet.

Welcoming Paul Lashbrook

A warm welcome to Paul Lashbrook to Original Organics, who has joined us this week as a Web / Software Developer.  Paul will be completely redeveloping all our internal systems, building them from the ground up to make us a lot more efficient.  Order processing will be streamlined and a lot of time will be saved in our office as we will be automating some boring manual tasks – freeing up our office staff to do what they do best – help our customers!

Paul will also be developing some improved features for our website that should make the entire customer experience ordering from us, dealing with us and finding help more enjoyable and easier than ever before!

Want to speak to us? The call is on us!

I’m pleased to announce that we’ve introduced a Freephone number for our team here at Original Organics. That means you don’t pay a penny if you need to call us for help with your Worms, wish to place an order, or just fancy a chat – the call is on us!

In the past we have avoided national rate numbers, always using our local Devon village (geographical) number for people to contact us on – but we’re now taking it a step further by paying for the call for you. Our new freephone number can be called at no charge from any UK landline or Payphone. The costs from mobiles may vary, but if you have included minutes with your tariff you might be better off using our geographical (01884) number anyway!

Of course, for some time customers have been able to request a callback via our website, talk to us via our Forums, send us an email or send a letter to us (the old fashioned way) by snail mail.

Our old number will always continue to operate, but over time we’ll update our product instructions and literature with the Freephone number as they come up for reprinting.

We also thought we’d choose a fun, relevant, number too… We think you’ll like it (and perhaps our regulars will be able to remember it?) :-

We’re very pleased to announce the launch of our Irish division offering our product range directly to customers in the Republic of Ireland.

So far so good, we’ve already served over a hundred Irish customers since the launch of our website in November – and the feedback has been exceptional. All products are priced in Euros with delivery direct to customers doors’ anywhere in Eire within just 48 hours.
